In connection with the upcoming budget negotiations, a decision must be made on whether the Network and Genre Venues scheme should be continued. The Danish genre organizations, comprising Art Music Denmark, JazzDanmark, ROSA, and TEMPI, representing a significant portion of the Danish music scene, see great value in the scheme. Therefore, we believe it should be maintained and expanded from 2025 onwards.

Geographical distribution and local anchoring

The Network and Genre Venues scheme strengthens the role of venues in local cultural life by focusing on networking and collaboration with local music and cultural actors. This positively impacts local growth environments and ensures that the venues’ activities are broadly anchored with the public.

The scheme also helps spread niche genres across the country, thus creating a richer and more diverse concert offering for audiences outside the larger cities and increasing earning opportunities for musicians in niche genres. It serves as an important supplement to the honorarium support scheme and regional venues, unlocking great potential among the many competent organizers across the country.

New formats and development of live music

In an industry increasingly dominated by multinational actors, streaming services, social media and “big business,” the Network and Genre Venues offer a space for new concert formats and rethinking the relationship between venue and audience.

This potential has been fully realized by the existing ten venues, which have shown in an inspiring way how strong, inclusive communities and innovative formats enhance diversity and engagement among both audiences and artists. We, therefore, see great potential in Network and Genre Venues as catalysts and laboratories for developing future live formats.

The next generation

Network and Genre Venues have proven particularly suitable and competent in recruiting and training the next generation of cultural entrepreneurs. Many venues have invited young people into the core operations, giving them active ownership in the venues’ management, programming and development.

This openness to collaboration and youth involvement strengthens local music environments and contributes to the well-being of those involved. This effort also enhances the industry as a whole, as young people acquire the skills to produce and develop cultural activities independently. In relation to the implementation of the upcoming culture pass, we also see Network and Genre Venues as an obvious central player.

In short…

– Network and Genre Venues have been a good idea from the start, and the ten existing venues have shown the great potential of rethinking the role and anchoring of venues locally and nationally in just two years.

– The scheme significantly contributes to both growth environments and the professional scene.

– We believe that the scheme constitutes a missing piece in the Danish live scene, which would be catastrophic to remove after such overwhelmingly positive experiences. In fact, we see an advantage in expanding with more venues, ideally focusing on embracing an even broader spectrum of Danish music.
