Sound art at the 2024 Olympics

In December 2023, we launched an Open Call with our partners for a sound artwork to be included in a cultural program curated by VisitDenmark.

Everyone on the selection committee, which consisted of representatives from the Danish Embassy in Paris, VisitDenmark and Art Music Denmark’s impartial music committee, was overwhelmed by the many compelling and inspiring projects that were submitted in connection with the call. After a careful assessment and discussion of the various works, the choice fell on the audiovisual work Mirage by percussionist and composer Ying-Hsueh Chen.

Following the selection of Ying-Hsueh Chen’s work, the Danish Embassy in Paris and Le Bicolore initiated a dialogue with Art Music Denmark about the development of an online exhibition with a number of the other works we had received in connection with our original Open Call. This resulted in the online exhibition Planetary Sounds, which was available on Le Bicolore’s website from July 20 to August 11. The works were selected by the Director of the Danish Embassy in Paris, Catherine Lefebvre, who was in consultative dialogue with Art Music Denmark’s project manager and communications manager, Alexander Julin Mortensen, on the design of the project and the works curated by her. The selected works were, in addition to Mirage, Bølger by Mads Emil Dreyer, VITI by Anna Katrin Ø. Egilstrøð and As You Were by Frederik Valentin, Sebastian Kloborg and Mikkel Borrisholt Grevsen.

In 2024, Art Music Denmark, as part of our work in Paris, has:

  • Developed an Open Call and selected a sound artwork for the Danish pavilion in Paris during the Olympics
  • Advised Le Bicolore/The Danish Embassy in Paris in relation to the development of the online exhibition Planetary Sound and assisted with dissemination and practical help

Sound Art during the Olympics 2024 is a collaboration between Art Music Denmark, VisitDenmark, the Danish Embassy in Paris and La Bicolore.
