Cecilie Penney has been selected for our residency at Cashmere Radio.

In May, we launched an open call for our next residency in collaboration with the German community radio station Cashmere Radio. The selected artist is Danish artist and composer Cecilie Penney, who will spend October working on her upcoming piece within the inspiring framework of Cashmere Radio in Berlin!

Reflecting on her expectations for the residency, Penney tells the following:

“In recent years, I’ve been focused on the Scandinavian healthcare system — on what it feels like to be a patient in a system that can be difficult to navigate. I’m particularly interested in the points where the system collides with the human — where bureaucracy overshadows presence, time, and care.

At Cashmere Radio, I will work on a sound piece unfolding as an electronic duet between a sanatorium from the early 1900s and a modern super-hospital. I plan to collect field recordings from hospitals — sounds of machines, footsteps and muffled conversations — and weave them together with vocal recordings. With this, I hope to explore how our ideas of illness and healing have shifted over time, and what it might mean to imagine a more sensuous healthcare system in the future.

Throughout the residency, I’ll explore the potential of radio as a space for closeness — a place where voices and stories can reveal small, intimate layers of experience. I’m looking forward to developing the work at Cashmere Radio and to engaging with dramaturgy, structure and rhythm within an inspiring community I can both learn from and contribute to.”

About Cecilie Penney
Cecilie Penney (b. 1990) is a Danish artist and composer working across sound, installation, video and text. Her practice explores how societal infrastructure and cultural norms shape human behavior, and how emotions and empathy function within structural and technological systems.

In recent years, she has focused on the Scandinavian healthcare system, questioning what it means to be ill and how patients navigate an institution that can be difficult to access or understand. Through a conceptual lens, Penney examines how patients are often expected to fit into rigid frameworks that fail to reflect their individual needs. Her practice invites reflection on how systemic change might emerge from emotional insight and collective reimagining.
