In collaboration with Art Music Denmark and Ukraine House, ES21 invites you to the second networking event in the “Brændpunkter” series. Through a dialogue between Elisabeth Nielsen and Juliana Hodkinson, the event will explore the value of music and the challenges it faces when war breaks out. The event also offers a free lunch and plenty of opportunities for networking.
In a turbulent time marked by crises, wars and climate change, ES21 and Art Music Denmark’s Brændpunkter series sheds light on the relationship between art and political experience, and on how art can create new pathways, transformations, perspectives and positive change in a time of decline, pain and unrest.
On September 18, Danish-Ukrainian pianist Elisabeth Nielsen will meet composer and chair of the Danish Composers’ Society, Juliana Hodkinson. Taking the war in Ukraine as their point of departure, they will focus on what characterises artistic and cultural values in times of crisis, solidarity and artistic recognition during wartime, and the different ways in which music can be political.

About Elisabeth Nielsen
Elisabeth Nielsen is a Danish-Ukrainian concert pianist who studied classical piano at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, as well as contemporary piano at the Pinerolo Academy of Music in Italy. Nielsen has given solo concerts and performed with orchestras in Denmark and abroad, appeared in several radio and television programmes, and released two solo CDs. She is also a cultural facilitator working on Danish-Ukrainian music projects and is a co-founder of the organisation Nielsen Saloner.
About Juliana Hodkinson
Juliana Hodkinson is a composer, sound artist and music writer. Born in the UK and now based in Berlin, she studied in Denmark, among other places, as part of her composition studies with Per Nørgård and Hans Abrahamsen. Hodkinson’s compositional background is rooted in chamber music, but she has since developed her work through interdisciplinary forms involving, among other things, installation, performance and film.
About ES21
ES21 is a network for the experimental scene, with a focus on innovative music ranging from art pop to the avantgarde. The network is open to all Koda members who are curious about new input and knowledge-sharing in a social setting that values both depth and conviviality. The network is run by music producer and cultural entrepreneur Jan Lippert and is a professional networking initiative under the auspices of the Danish Composers’ Society. The Brændpunkter event series is supported by Art Music Denmark.
