The Danish sound artist Morten Riis has been selected for Northern Connection together with three other Nordic composers.
In February, together with our partners, we announced a new open call for commissioned works to be performed in at least one of the partner countries involved in the Northern Connection project. The ambition of Northern Connection is to strengthen connections between composers, ensembles and festivals within contemporary music across the Nordic countries and Scotland.
We are proud to announce the selection of Danish sound artist Morten Riis. As part of Northern Connection, Riis will create a new work entitled Earthing — a work that explores how technology-based music can be created in a more sustainable and material-based way. In Earthing, the ground on which the work is performed functions both as an energy source and as a sonic collaborator. The work will premiere at the Musica nova Festival in Helsinki in February 2027, followed by performances in Denmark.
In addition to Morten Riis, Kalle Vainio (FI), Shiori Usui (SCO) and Louisa Palmi (NO) have also been selected for Northern Connection. Congratulations to all four!

Finland: Music Finland, Musica nova Helsinki and defunensemble
Norway: Music Norway, Ultima Festival and Ensemble Temporum
Scotland: Scottish Music Centre, Sound Festival and Red Note Ensemble
Denmark: Art Music Denmark and Klang Festival
