Artist Maria Lepistö has been selected for our residency at Cashmere Radio in Berlin.

In March, we announced an open call for a residency at the German community radio Cashmere Radio, which will take place in October. After a thorough consideration of the many exciting applications we received, the selection committee chose the  artist Maria Lepistö for the residency.

On October 10, Art Music Denmark will send the artist Maria Lepistö to a residency at Cashmere Radio in Berlin. There, she will develop an artistic radio program at the station based on her submitted project proposal in connection with our Open Call earlier this year. The selection was made by a committee consisting of a representative from Art Music Denmark’s independent music committee and representatives from Cashmere Radio’s music committee.

Regarding her upcoming project, Lepistö says:

“I have spent over a decade listening to recordings from a bio-acoustic archive, experimenting with storytelling, animal sounds, and the human voice. The archive, called the Tierstimmenarchiv, is based in Berlin. During my residency at Cashmere Radio, I will record myself narrating a semi-fictional story about my encounter with the scientist Karl.

When I first started listening to the recordings, I was in awe of the diversity of voices on this planet. However, I soon shifted my focus to the scientists holding the recorders. Some recordings were made within the rooms of Humboldt University, capturing mysterious sounds of footsteps, undefined objects slamming, and bodies tumbling around.

I want to return to these spaces and let my voice resonate with their architecture. As a field recordist myself, I will approach narration as a performance – an action occurring at a specific time and place.”

You can read more about Maria Lepistö and her practice on her website.
