Art Music Denmark’s project manager for sound art, Alexander Julin Mortensen, participated in the event Signals2Noise, where a coalition of community radios presented a variety of new works, performances, workshops and talks. The event clearly demonstrated the significant value of establishing international networks.

In 2024, Art Music Denmark collaborated with the German community radio station Cashmere Radio on an artistic residency. Currently, Maria Lepistö is working on a new sound art piece at their facilities in Berlin, which will later be presented on their online radio platform.

On October 4, Art Music Denmark’s project manager for sound art attended Cashmere Radio’s extensive event Signals2Noise, held at Betonhalle in silent green—a former crematorium now functioning as a cultural center, concert venue, and more. The event showcased new sound art and radio works, as well as performances, concerts and workshops, presented by 16 community radio stations from various countries. The initiative was rooted in a shared network uniting these radio stations.

Among the participating community radios was Denmark’s The Lake Radio, which contributed with several inspiring works and features. For example, in the stairwell between two rooms in Betonhalle, visitors encountered the sound installation Walls Who Whisper by Timmy Olivia Thyge Johansen and Louise Tandrup Esbensen. The work incorporated sound recordings from the Danish folklore collection Viser på Valse (1907–1947). Through speakers mounted on the walls, one could faintly hear sounds and voices from the past, reoccupying the space like a kind of haunting. This created a sense of collapse between past and present, as the voices from the folklore collection suddenly influenced the room and the audience’s perception of it.

Danish artist and musician Frederik Heidemann, who is also a part of The Lake, presented a listening session titled Works for Radio: Listening Cinema. In this format, the audience listened to four selected music and radio works in complete darkness, encouraging deep and attentive listening. Later in the evening, The Lake collaborated with the Danish/Icelandic/Australian group oceanfloor.group to present a parallel broadcast.

Signals2Noise was an inspiring and eye-opening event, showcasing the immense benefits of participating in international networks with like-minded actors. Through works, talks, and workshops focusing on themes like political and cultural resistance, artistic innovation, historicity, and the relationship between past and present, it became clear how fruitful the creative exchange and knowledge-sharing between community radios had been. The event led to the creation of new works of art that might not have come to life otherwise.

Art Music Denmark’s Work with International Networks
At Art Music Denmark, we are committed to facilitating new networks to foster knowledge-sharing and establish new collaborations. In 2021, we initiated the Nordic network STATUS, in which we have been actively involved ever since. The network’s next public activity will take place during Nordic Music Days in Glasgow, featuring a presentation and discussion on sustainable international music exchange.
