Today, Art Music Denmark releases the report “Kammermusikforeninger i Danmark”.
In 2023, Art Music Denmark commissioned a report by consultant Maria Frej to map the diverse landscape of chamber music associations in Denmark. This report, titled “Kammermusikforeninger i Danmark” aims to acquire new knowledge to support these organizations effectively.
The report highlights the differences and similarities in the sector compared to 20 years ago, including recommendations for both the associations and Art Music Denmark. Currently, there are about 70 associations hosting around 640 concerts for approximately 53,000 attendees in the 2022-2023 season.
These activities are crucial for the classical music ecosystem, offering access to live classical music outside major cities and providing essential work for freelance classical musicians. Despite the high artistic quality, the funding for these associations is minimal, often only covering musician fees, with limited resources for audience development.
Challenges include a decline in the number of associations and concerns about future sustainability due to financial constraints, changing audience behaviors and difficulties in recruiting new board members. The report suggests conducting annual audience surveys and economic assessments to improve knowledge and support, focusing on audience development and board training.
The full report can be accessed on Art Music Denmark’s website (in Danish): “Kammermusikforeninger i Danmark“.
