In November, Art Music Denmark, in collaboration with the New York-based composer collective Bang on a Can, announced an open call for composers and musicians to apply for a three-week residency at the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival. The selection was made by Bang on a Can’s jury, and among the Danish applicants, composer Filippa Westerberg, has been selected.

The Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival will once again take place this summer in the spectacular setting of MASS MoCA in the United States. The three-week residency runs from July 14 to August 3, and this year, composer, cellist, and vocalist Filippa Westerberg has the pleasure of participating as a composer at the festival.

We asked Filippa what she is most looking forward to: “I’m really looking forward to immersing myself in the piece I’ll be writing throughout the spring. I’m also incredibly excited to meet new people and discover new music. I’m convinced it’s going to be an intense and amazing experience, and that I’ll build an entirely new community on the other side of the world.” – Filippa Westerberg

When Filippa writes music, the voice is often a strong source of inspiration—even in her instrumental works. She is also deeply interested in working across artistic disciplines, and her music often resides in a genre-blending landscape, drawing from her background in classical music, Nordic folk, jazz, pop, and vocal music.

About Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival

The Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival is a three-week residency and musical utopia for innovative composers and performers, held at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts.

The festival is dedicated to the exploration of new music through seminars, workshops, concerts, and performances, led by some of the most skilled artists, composers, and musicians, including Gregg August (bass), Maya Stone (bassoon), David Cossin (percussion), Lauren Radnofsky (cello), Michael Gordon (composer), David Lang (composer), Brad Lubman (conductor), Nick Photinos (cello), Vicky Chow (piano), Todd Reynolds (violin), Ken Thomson (saxophone and clarinet), Julia Wolfe (composer), and many more.

Art Music Denmark’s collaboration with the Bang on a Can Summer Festival is supported by the Danish Arts Foundation.
